The National Park Service (NPS) provides a certification program
for Lewis and Clark sites along the Lewis and Clark National Historic
Trail. This is an honorary designation allowing the site to be acknowledged
as an integral part of the trail system and may allow the site to
be listed in various interpretive materials. Certified sites are
provided a wall plaque announcing the site as certified and an exterior
sign displaying the national historic trail logo.
The Missouri Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission is in the process
of securing certifications for interpretive sites across Missouri
as part of its interpretive panel program. Certification of these
sites will allow use of new "HISTORICAL MARKER" designations
along Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail highway routes. Other
Missouri sites may be signed with these markers if certified through
the NPS certification process. Highway signing requests may be approved
by the Missouri Department of Transportation if they include a copy
of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail certification agreement.
A nonfederal entity must apply to the NPS and meet certain criteria
to qualify for certification. To qualify, sites must be maintained
in accordance with management practices consistent with NPS standards.
Once certified, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail logo
must be displayed at the site. At that time, application can be made
to the Missouri Department of Transportation for highway route signing
if so desired.
